A child's ability to develop spoken language, learn at school, and build social confidence relies entirely on clear hearing during the critical first three years of life. When pediatric hearing loss goes undetected, language milestones are missed and school performance suffers.
Age-Specific Red Flags for Parents
Infants (0 to 6 Months)
- Does not startle, blink, or jump at sudden loud noises (such as a door slamming).
- Does not turn head or eyes toward a parent's speaking voice by 4 to 6 months.
- Seems to hear only loud vibrating sounds and ignores softer environmental cues.
Toddlers (7 to 18 Months)
- Does not turn directly toward their name being called from across the room.
- Does not imitate common simple vocal sounds ('ba-ba', 'ma-ma', 'da-da').
- Relies predominantly on visual gestures and pointing instead of vocalizing.
Preschool & School-Age Children
- Speaks noticeably louder than other children of the same age.
- Frequently asks "What?", "Pardon?", or turns the television to excessively high volumes.
- Teacher reports inattentiveness, daydreaming, or behavioral restlessness in the classroom.
- Unclear articulation of consonant sounds (substituting 't' for 'k' or missing 's' and 'sh').
