The OAE test (Otoacoustic Emissions test) checks how well your inner ear—or cochlea—responds to sound. It plays soft tones into the ear and measures the tiny sounds (called emissions) your ear produces in response.
To perform the test, a hearing specialist places a small probe in your ear canal. The probe sends sound into your ear and records how the inner ear reacts. A healthy cochlea creates sound echoes, which the test picks up. If no emissions are present, it may indicate hearing loss or inner ear damage.
Screen newborns and young children
Detect early signs of hearing loss
Confirm inner ear function
Support results from other hearing tests
The OAE test is quick, safe, and completely painless. It doesn’t require you to respond, so it’s perfect for infants or anyone unable to take a standard hearing test.
